Since its founding, Voices of Understanding (VOU) has focused on creating safe, confidential spaces for young people to engage in meaningful dialogue about Israel and Palestine. Our mission has always been rooted in listening, empathy, and understanding — not in taking sides.
In light of recent events that underscore the dangers of polarization and dehumanization, we recognize the urgent need for respectful conversations across a wider range of difficult topics. Too often, young people feel silenced, judged, or attacked when they express their views on issues that matter deeply to them.
That’s why VOU is launching a Pilot Program that expands our dialogue model to include additional topics such as:
These are complex, often divisive issues where misunderstandings can deepen divides. We believe that the same approach that has guided our work on Israel and Palestine — confidential, facilitated conversations designed to foster active listening and mutual respect — can help students engage across differences in these areas as well.
Polarization can make young people feel like they must choose a side or stay silent. At VOU, we believe there is another way: dialogue that encourages curiosity over accusation, listening over labeling, and empathy over hostility.
This pilot is an opportunity to test how our model of dialogue can help bridge divides on pressing social and political topics, just as it has with Israel and Palestine.
Together, we can build a generation that knows how to listen across differences — and find understanding where others see only division.
